Summary
IsraAID is looking for Psychosocial Support officer for the organization’s Emergency Response in
Mozambique post Cyclone Idai to be based in Beira, with frequent travel to various districts in
Sofala Province.
This position is an exciting opportunity to get hands-on experience in a non-profit project and lead
innovative grass-roots activities in the field. The ideal candidate will have a combined experience in
humanitarian aid and a background in PSS in education.
CONTEXT
IsraAID is a non-profit, non-governmental and apolitical humanitarian aid agency dedicated to
supporting populations in crisis around the world, Founded in 2001. As of 2017, the organization
has responded to crises in 42 countries and has operations span across 17 countries and a wide
number of different sectors of expertise from both the humanitarian aid and international
development arenas.
With some 1.85 million people directly affected by Cyclone Idai’s destructive path, international
organizations are calling this “massive disaster” the worst weather-related crisis to have ever hit
the southern hemisphere. The cyclone ravaged Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, beginning on
14th March 2019. At least 750 are dead across the region, although the number is feared to be
higher. IsraAID’s Emergency Response Team arrived on March 23rd and began conducting a needs
assessment in partnership with the Government of Mozambique, international NGOs, and local
partners. At least 130,000 were living in shelters across 136 sites; schools were repurposed as
shelters, with many children unable to attend classes. Today, hundreds of thousands of people are
still suffering due to a paralyzing loss of crops and livestock, overwhelming damage to buildings
and key infrastructure, and thousands of vulnerable communities left without psycho-social
support.
General Responsibilities
The PSS Officer will lead training, provide supervision to partners and beneficiaries, and support all
activities in Sofala Province regarding PSS. The PSS Officer will contribute to the vision for IsraAID
in Mozambique, in line with the organization’s established policies, principles and operating
practices, as well as good management of the political, social, cultural & economic environment.
The PSS Officer will work under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and is responsible for:
Specific Responsibilities
Training
Ensure that all programs, projects and activities follow the objectives, identifiable
direct/indirect beneficiaries, and the impact-oriented implementation plan laid out by Project
Coordinator and Program Manager
Ensure effective monitoring and evaluation processes and procedures are followed for each
program for the effective and ethical implementation of programs
Ensure trainings and staff interaction are carried out in a responsible and professional manner
for effectiveness and quality
Use TOT methodologies within the training and conduct professional supervision to
beneficiaries
Program Management
Ensure all budgeting and administrative tasks in support of specific activities are followed up
on and executed with the expectations of the PM
Provide support to the Project Coordinator to ensure the coordination and timely delivery of
program activities
Ensure implementation of activities follow the work plan timeline, and coordinate with Project
Coordinator to mitigate challenges that arise
Provide progress and financial reports as required by the government and IsraAID HQ, as well
As Accountability Procedures As Required By Other Organizations.
Human Resource Management
Provide coaching and mentoring advice to trainees when necessary and lead initiatives to
develop beneficiaries’ capacity
Essential Skills, Knowledge And Competencies
Significant experience in an equivalent position in a development or humanitarian context
Experience in facilitating trainings
University degree in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support related areas
Experience working in training and program implementation
Excellent communication skills
Demonstrated leadership skills and pro-activity
Proven ability to work independently in a changing environment
IT literate (Office package – Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Able to work in a high stress environment
Good writing and communication
Ability to give trainings in an interesting and clear way

LANGUAGES
Required: Professionally fluent or native speaker in Portuguese and fluent in English.
Highly Desirable: Proficiency in a local language, such as Sena and/or Ndau.
